Mononucleosis
Mononucleosis
Mononucleosis is a viral disease (Epstein-Barr virus/EBV) caused by contact with saliva, mucus from the nose and throat, and tears. It can be spread by kissing, sharing drinking glasses and utensil, or any such contact. EBV viruses can also spread through blood and semen during sexual contact, blood transfusions, and organ transplantations. Symptoms include extreme fatigue, swollen spleen, fever and sore throat. There is no vaccine to prevent mononucleosis or specific treatment. Based on the severity of the symptoms, a healthcare provider may recommend treatment of specific organ systems that are affected.
